Fashion house Alabama Chanin has a new line of organic cotton clothing made from its own cotton field. It's not just an experiment in keeping production local but also an attempt to bring back to life the tradition of clothes-making in the Deep South.
Alabama Chanin, the fashion and lifestyle company founded by Natalie Chanin and Billy Reid, is best known for her flowing, made-to-order organic garments (衣服), entirely hand-made and inspired by the rural South of the 1930s and '40s. "It's not just 'factory work', "Chanin says. "This is a skill that's dying out in this country. ""It's part of the nation's 'cultural sustainability to preserve these things', "Chanin says, "to be able to make our clothes. "
Her business partner, K. P. McNeill, is the one who first thought about growing their own cotton. The ideas of going from field to garment made Chanin think of how generations ago, manufacturing was of a vertical(纵向的) affair. Could that be done today And organically They came up with a plan to test it. Reid says it meant no artificial chemicals. "A lot of the weeds had to be pulled by hand. It's not just your normal cotton operation that's automated, "Reid says.
Chanin holds a piece of ivory-colored cloth made from the hand-picked cotton grown in the Alabama field. "I've never seen cotton quite as clean and clear as this, "Chanin says, "I don't think people have seen that since cotton was really a driving factor of destruction in this country. "
Chanin says this project is about transforming cotton into something more modern. "I mean, cotton has an ugly history. It has built fortunes, it's destroyed nations, it's enslaved people, "says Chanin. "But to me this cotton. . is part of making a new story for cotton. "

The dog is moving through the grass, closely followed by bear biologist Carrie Hunt, who is observing his reactions as he sees the grizzly bear carcass(尸体) for the first time. "Find it, " says Hunt, encouraging the two-month-old puppy. The puppy's ears and tail are up as he approaches the bear, but with the confidence that Hunt is looking for in a bear conflict dog.
This is a Karelian bear dog, a type of animal known to be fearless and capable of standing up to large mammals. People once used them to hunt. Today, Hunt is using them to keep bears alive.
Karelian puppies undergo a series of procedures where trainers teach them the right behaviours and evaluate their personality and how they react. Just 20% will make the cut as bear conflict dogs. When ready, they are distributed across North America-for example, working with the Alaska fire service to keep firefighters safe and reduce the number of bears killed.
In America, bears live in landscapes where the human footprint is expanding. Consequently, people and predators(捕食性动物)are forced to share space, setting the stage for increased conflicts. Historically, wildlife managers tried to scare bears away with noise makers and rubber bullets (子弹), but that did not always work. Now the wildlife department is employing dogs. When a bear dares to come too close, the dogs chase it away in a brief pursuit. "For the bear, it is a bad experience, " Hunt says. Bears are born to be wary of animals of the dog family as wolves can kill their babies. The lesson taught by the dogs is one that the bears seem to remember. A study found that bears that had encounters with bear dogs spent less time in urban areas.
"The dogs make me a better biologist because they allow me to keep bears in the landscape as long as I possibly can, rather than having to kill and remove them, "Hunt says.

As you read this, pause to reflect on your recent interactions. As a politician, husband, and father, I encounter various spoken language styles: analytical or chatty, formal or informal, pointed or gentle, cooperative or decisive. Talk is the currency of politics. It is our way of negotiating, debating, and persuading. Talk is also the currency of learning-how we develop our ideas, deepen our thinking and share our feelings.
That's why I want speaking skills, sometimes called "oracy", to play an important part in Labor's plans for a reformed school curriculum(课程).
Employers value speaking skills equally with reading and writing. The ability to speak well and express yourself should be something every child should master. But the curriculum doesn't allow us to provide this. This is short-sighted. An inability to express your thoughts fluently is a key barrier to getting on and doing well in life.
Oracy is in part about good public speaking and debating skills, but in reality, it's about teaching young people to make strong arguments, choose wise words, understand their audience, form meaningful social connections, and use facial expressions and body language to convey their message. Above all else it's about finding your voice. To work out who you are and what you believe. If reading opens up a world of imagination and possibility, then speaking and listening opens up a lifetime of empowerment-a chance for those who feel invisible in their own country to be heard. It is about the confidence to speak out, to call out injustice or harm.
And the other side of speaking is listening, which can also be taught. Listening, truly listening, develops tolerance and understanding. And as parents we can play our part. We've all been there, at mealtimes, silent as we all stare at our devices. Our job, all of ours, is to get off our screens and give young people, and adults, the gift of listening.
So, oracy-speaking and listening-needs to be placed firmly at the heart of school life.
32. How does talk help a politician
A. It deepens his wishful thinking.
B. It enhances his analytical skills.
C. It strengthens persuasive power.
D. It provides emotional support.
33. Why does the author suggest a reform in the British school curriculum
A. Employers underestimate the value of speaking.
B. Academic pressure makes students poor-sighted.
C. Spoken language is regarded as least important.
D. Oracy should deserve more attention at school.
34. How does the author illustrate his argument in paragraph 4
A. By sharing different opinions.
B. By clarifying the definition.
C. By describing personal experiences.
D. By employing the concept.
35. What are parents advised to do
A. Set a good example for their children.
B. Balance screen time and mealtime.
C. Have oral face-to-face communication.
D. Disconnect from the virtual world.

Many would love a deep connection when looking at a painting or sculpture. But art can feel inaccessible, and museums can be hard to explore. Here are ways to have a meaningful connection when looking at art.
Keep an open mind
36 . Some artworks may be surprising, others might be a letdown. And that's OK. Allow yourself to feel however the art makes you feel. You can love it. You can hate it. You can cry, feel angry or laugh.
Pick a museum relevant to your interest
Boost your chances of finding something you connect with by going to a museum of your interest. If you're into climate change, pick one showing artworks inspired by Earth conservation. If you want to go to a museum just for the social media, do it. 37
Keep your museum visit short and focused
Art museums can be huge. So, be realistic about how long you spend there. You don't need more than an hour or two. 38 . Also, be strategic about what you want to look at. Decide whether you are looking for something new or are you returning to an artwork you've seen and loved.
39
Once in front of an artwork you like, take time to observe qualities that may not come through on a computer screen, including texture and brushstrokes. 40 -and observe what's happening in the big picture. You can also move your body--take a finger to the air and trace the movement of the brushstrokes.
Appreciating how artists make sense of the world can open up new pathways and actually help you make a personal connection, enabling you to make sense of these things in your lives, too.
A. No judgment here
B. Really look at the art
C. Be mindful of your belongings
D. Share your insights with your loved ones
E. Take a few steps back, stand in the center
F. After that, it becomes "information overload"
G. Avoid having concepts about what you'll see before arriving

I shared confidently that I wanted to be a wife and mother. Everyone urged me to aim high. I couldn't think of a higher calling, but they didn't seem to understand including my parents. No one did except one college teacher, my English teacher. She encouraged me by telling me that she trusted my judgment and knew that in the end all would work out for me even if I followed my heart and chose to simply be a wife and mother. I was so grateful for her understanding and encouraging words.
Well, life was good as I pursued my goals. I did attend college while waiting for my love, who was serving in the Navy to get back home. I knew that I was really just buying time until our marriage, but I had scholarships that took care of the expense, so it seemed like a good thing to do. Finally, we were married, and I was extremely happy with my choice to be a wife. Two years later, we started our family; and again, I knew that I'd made the right choice. Being a mother was so wonderful. We went on to have two more children, and I was blessed by being able to be a stay-at-home mom. It was all I'd ever dreamed of. My parents gradually accepted my happiness.
When the day came that all our little darlings were in school, I began to pray about what to do with the time I found I had on my hands. Through a series of events that could be an entire story of their own, God let me know without a doubt that my next goal should be to become a teacher. I was so excited! I mean, how many people get the chance to grow up and be exactly what they want and then do it again with a new dream I decided to take education courses and was all set to begin classes in June of 1991.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Unfortunately, on May 16, I received my husband's boss's call from a nearby hospital.

第一节
Dear friends,
I am Li Hua, from the Students' Union. Welcome to our school. I'm glad to introduce our Whole Book Reading Project. The project was launched last year. First our school invited an expert to deliver a lecture on how to carry out the project. Then we chose our books depending on our interests and formed our groups according to the topics chosen. After that we started our reading and discussed what interested or puzzled us inside our group. Finally each group gave a presentation to the whole school.
Not only did we improve our reading skills for a whole book, which quite differ from the ones for a single passage, but also we enriched our life, experienced pleasure, and broadened our horizons. Of course our English proficiency greatly improved. I wish to join in more such projects.
Hoping you can enjoy your visit to our school. Thank you!
第二节
Unfortunately, on May 16, I received my husband's boss's call from a nearby hospital. My husband was in an accident that resulted in his having to have his arm cut. He was left unable to work. While it was evident then that we would actually need for me to go to work, we weren't sure exactly how we'd be able to put me through the courses with neither of us working. I had postponed starting school in June, but by August I went ahead with my plan to finish the courses for my degree in education. There were many times that we weren't sure we could "make it".
Help came just when I was struggling for my dream. One Christmas we weren't sure about the next semester, so we asked my father if he and mom would buy my books for that term instead of other Christmas gifts. He immediately wrote me a check that covered not just my books but the next semester's tuition as well. Not long after that I was awarded a nontraditional student scholarship and another smaller scholarship that I'd applied for. You see, the big scholarship that I was awarded had been funded by the very same teacher who 20 years earlier had encouraged me to do what I knew was right in my heart.

根据后文中的observe what’s happening in the big picture可知, 不仅要站在画作前欣赏, 还可后退几步, 换个角度看看有什么变化。
49. A。 roll的意思是toturn over and over or round and round while remaining in the same place; to make sth do this(使)原地转圈, 原地打转, 与情景不符。
50. B。 作者对其他滑冰人的描述用了sense of space、to avoid knocking into each other, all while on rhythm等词语, 能看出作者是惊叹他们的高超技艺。
moving in her knee pads限定的是an older woman, 一位年长的女士穿着护膝小心翼翼地向前移动。
54. D。 maintain 的意思是保持不让停下或减弱(continue to have it, and do not let it stop or grow weaker)。
57. After.
58. misty.
59. while/and.
60. highlights.
61. the.
62. Participating.
petitors.
64. actually.
65. to select.

M: I've asked my parents to live with us for a while, so they can look after her for me while I am at work or in the class.
W: How sweet of them! I have to work in the day time, study at night, and do housework during my spare time. I really hope I have eight arms and legs, like an octopus.
M: Me too. Sometimes I do want to give it up. I can't deal with so many things at a time. But studying in college has been my dream.
W: It is just the same with me. When is your Adult College Entrance Exam
M: It's close coming up at the end of this month. That will be no more than 15 days from now on.

Text 10
M: You've heard the old saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words. "Well, a campus visit is worth a thousand brochures. Nothing beats walking around a campus to get a feel for it. Some students report that all they needed to know that they loved or hated a campus was to drive through it. Then there is the true story of the guy who applied to a school because it had a famous name. Got accepted. Didn't visit, and when he arrived to move into the dorms, discovered to his horror it was an all-male school. A visit would have taken care of that problem.
The best time to experience the college environment is during the spring of your junior year or the fall of your senior year. Although you may have more time to make college visits during your summer time off, your observation will be more accurate when you can see the campus in full swing. Open houses are a good idea and provide you with opportunities to talk to students, faculty members, and administrators. Write or call in advance to take student-conducted campus tours.
