that引导宾语从句可以表示“是否”吗

问题描述
书上都说that引导名词性从句时没有任何含义，但是在下面这句中that表示“是否”的意思：
He looked in the glass to check that his tie was straight. 他对着镜子看领带是否系正。
请问：这个that用得对吗？这个that可以换成if或whether吗？

▲《麦克米兰高阶》p338对于check第1意项【检查/查看/核实】的英文解释或许能给我们一些启示：to examine sth inorder to find out whether it is how it should be 换句话说，不管其后面跟的是什么，它本身都具有【是否】这层含义，与that无关。
I checked the car for signs of damage. 我把车检查了一下，看看有没有损坏的迹象。
Before starting, check that you have everything you need. 出发前，确认一下你是否把需要的东西都带上了。
▲ 其后当然也可以跟 whether 及其他类型宾语从句：
Could you please check whether a package has arrived for me? 请你帮我查一下我的包裹到了吗？（有意思的是，该句译文竟然没有【是否】的身影，不过实际上我们都知道其实其本身已含有此意）

I will check that everything is done. 我将检查所有的事情是否做完。
I think I remembered to switch the oven off, but you'd better check that I did it. 我好像记得把烤箱关了，但你最好再查看一下我是否关了。
I forgot to check whether I had anything else to attend to. 我忘了检查一下是不是还有什么别的事情要做。
Don't forget to check if (whether) the door is locked. 不要忘记检查一下门是否锁上了。
