Why not...不可以用于过去吗

问题描述
老师说口语中常说的 Why not…? 只用于现在或将来，不能用过去。如：
You’re looking tired. Why not take a hohday? 你一脸倦容。怎么不休假呢?
Why not wait till the winter sales to buy a new coat? 为什么不等到冬季大贱卖时再买一件新外衣呢?
但是，下面的这句就不地对吗（因为它是用于过去）？
Why not try knocking at the back door, even if nobody heard you at the front door. 即使前门没人听到，为什么不试试敲敲后门？

▲Why not do sth? 这一句式主要用于提出建议，所以通常不用于谈论情况。如：
Why not use both? 为什么不两者都用?
Why not give Claire a call? 为什么不给克莱尔打个电话？
Why not join our free mailing list? 为什么不加入我们的免费邮寄名单呢？
Why not throw a party for your friends? 干吗不在家里为你的朋友们搞个聚会？
Why not wait till the winter sales to buy a new coat? 为什么不等到冬季大贱卖时再买一件新外衣呢?
Why not grow your own fruit at a fraction of the price? 你为什么不自己种水果，比这个价格要便宜很多。
▲但是单独使用的 why not？（即后面不接动词的时候），它可用于谈论现在、过去或将来。如：
A: Let’s eat out tonight. 我们今晚出去吃饭吧。
B: Yes, why not? 对，为什么不呢?（why not 表示同意）
A: I didn't go to school yesterday. 我昨天没有去学校。
B: Why not? 为什么？（why not 询问原因）
