As a freshman, the start of high school was a bit strange. From harder classes to strange hallways, we surely are the new kids of the school. We have just survived our first full week of Hawthorne High School (HHS) and here are some of our thoughts on our experiences:
Upon entering our new home away from home, we were happily greeted by the seniors, who cheered as we walked through the school gate. We were given new information about the next four years of our lives. At the end of the week we experienced our first pep rally (动员会), where we received a warm welcome from the upper classmen. Many things are different here than they were at middle school, and it has taken some getting used to.
For example, we have rotating drop schedules (轮换的课表) with different classes, in a different order each day. There are also two lunchrooms for all the students to eat in, and depending on our schedule for that day, we either have an early or late lunch. In these lunchrooms, we are allowed to use our phones.
Most of the lockers in the freshman hallway don’t have a shelf in them, but they are more spacious than the ones at middle school. Another difference is that you can share a class with someone in a different grade. Teachers here also like you to use a binder (活页夹), not a notebook. Besides, we have the chance to join a lot of different clubs including Journalism and Broadcasting.
As you can see, HHS has offered us many wonderful chances and we are trusted to do more things. Being a freshman at HHS is an amazing experience.

7.What is the text mainly about

Dealing with behavioral problems at school is not easy, but Dr. Terrance Newton is doing that with a surprisingly effective solution.
In his first year as headmaster of Warner Elementary School in Wilmington, Delaware Newton has already seen a tremendous change in his at-risk students. All it took was just a few quality conversations and a pair of scissors.
Newton saw the problem as soon as he started at the school. Bullying (欺凌行为) was out of hand, and students were constantly required to stop attending school for their behaviors. He believed the best way to solve this was to build positive relationships with students. So he decided to set up a barbershop at school.
Having cut hair before, Newton thought the barbershop could be a safe space for students to open up. And he was right — not only has he developed a good relationship with former troublemakers, but suspensions (停学) have dropped from 103 to 4 in the last year! Even better, bullying has nearly stopped. “I take care of my babies,” Newton said. “It’s about building the relationship, and I use that barbershop to build connections.”
Kamisha Collins has seen the difference in her 11-year-old son, Brandon Ponzo. “In the beginning of the school year, my son started off really rough and was not getting along with Dr. Newton, but now they have built this bond — he loves him very much.” Collins said. “Dr. Newton says positive things to them while he is cutting their hair. And my son’s grades have gotten so much better.”
What a brilliant idea — not to mention a fantastic leader! Thanks to Newton, a little love and care have made a big influence on difficult kids.
8.What does the underlined word “tremendous” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Huge. B.Simple. C.Physical. D.Confusing.
9.Why did Newton run a barbershop at school
A.To take better care of his family.
B.To deal with students’ bad behavior.
C.To help poor students get their hair cut.
D.To strengthen connection between teaching staff.
10.What do Collins’ words in paragraph 5 show
A.Newton’s actions worked well on Ponzo.
B.Teenagers should be paid great attention to.
C.Conversations made no difference to Ponzo.
D.Schools should focus on students behaviors.
11.What words can best describe Newton
A.Optimistic and strict. B.Knowledgeable and modest.
C.Honest and brave. D.Thoughtful and responsible.

This month millions of American kids can forget about classroom bells and set off for grandparents’ homes, sleep-away camps and lifeguard stands. But the summer vacation hasn’t always been a birthright of US schoolchildren. Before the Civil War, schools operated on one of two calendars, neither of which included a summer vacation. Rural schooling was divided into summer and winter terms, leaving kids free to help with the farm work in the spring planting and fall harvest seasons. Urban students, meanwhile, regularly had as many as 48 weeks of study a year, with one break per quarter.
In the 1840s, however, educational reformers like Horace Mann moved to combine the two calendars out of concern that rural schooling was not enough and that overusing of young minds could lead to nervous disorders. Summer appeared as the obvious time for a break: it offered a rest for teachers, fitted in the farming calendar and reduced doctors’ concern that packing students into hot classrooms would promote the spread of disease.
But people’s opinion about the modern US school year, which averages 180 days, is still divided. Some experts say its pleasant but lazy summer break, which took hold in the early 20th century, is one of the reasons maths skills and graduation rates of US high schoolers ranked well below average in two international education reports published in 2007. Others insist that with children under increasing pressure to devote their downtime to internships (实习) or study, there is still room for an institution that protects the lazy days of childhood.
12.What did the rural school calendar before the Civil War allow children to do
A.Enjoy a summer vacation. B.Take a break each quarter.
C.Have 48 weeks for study a year. D.Assist their parents with farm work.
13.What did the educational reformers do in the 1840s
A.They introduced summer vacation. B.They shortened rural school terms.
C.They promoted the study of farming. D.They advocated higher pay for teachers.
14.Which of the following is NOT a reason why the reformers chose summer for the break
A.Rural students could help with farm work at home.
B.Classrooms were packed with students.
C.Teachers could refresh themselves during the vacation.
D.There were concerns that students might get sick in the summer heat.
15.Why are some people unhappy about the modern US school year
A.It pushes teachers too hard. B.It reduces the quality of education.
C.It ignores scientific instruction. D.It includes no time for internships.
