whether和if的区别主要有含义不同、用法不同。whether的含义：是否；不管；无论；if含义：如果；即使；每当；条件；设想；whether用作连词，意思是“是否，是不是”，可引导名词从句或动词不定式短语。
if和whether有时可以互换
1.表示是否（隐含是与否的选择），名词性从句（主语从句除外）中:
（if更常用，whether更正式）
I doubt whether/if the plan will succeed.
我怀疑这个计划能否成功。
I don't know whether/if I'll go to graduate school after graduation.
我不知道毕业后是否要读研。
I’m unsure whether/if they will accept the invitation.
我不确定他们是否会接受邀请。

请注意：
尽管if也可以，一般人都倾向于用whether…or…或whether… or not！
名词性从句（主语从句除外）中or not往往可以省略。

二、用法不同
1.whether：whether用作连词，意思是“是否，是不是”，可引导名词从句或动词不定式短语。whether还可引导让步状语从句，意思是“不管，无论”，从句中通常用一般现代时代替将来时。
2.if：if作为从属连词，可引导条件状语从句、让步状语从句和名词从句。if引导条件状语从句，从句可为真实条件从句，也可为虚拟条件从句。
三、侧重点不同
1.whether：whether引导的从句常可以与连词or或or not直接连用。
2.if：if则不能与引导的从句常可以与连词or或or not直接连用。
