英语雅思作文(通用20篇) 第一篇

Discuss the difference between fast food and traditional food, such as nutrition, and recipe?

Living in a fast-paced society, the modern eaters are not longer interested in the contents of their food, but focused on whether a convenient meal is available at hand to devour. Statistics indicate that even housewives spend much shorter time at kitchen than their predecessors. This writing will compare and contrast advantages and disadvantages of fast food and traditional food.

Traditional food has its unshakable position in the human culture both in the social and historical context. Historically, chefs have gone to all lengths to experiment on novelties, invent cooking skills to gratify guests hunger. Hence, traditional food has secured its incomparable value with a complex of tantalising features, including the variance, flavour, and taste. Its unique charms can nurture social relations as well. A family is accustomed to prepare a traditional feast to serve their guests at weekend or on holiday, such as Christmas.

Further, traditional food is favourably nutritious and balanced, compared with fast food. Dieticians have suggested audience through millions of televised courses that traditional food can retain more nutrition before being served on the table, for in general, they are cooked with a temperate heat. By contrast, the fast food are made at such a high temperature that nutrition has inescapably vaporised during the cooking process. Meanwhile, cooks pay more attention to the balance of recipe when preparing traditional food, such as combing meat with vegetable.

Despite a range of advantages, traditional food is overshadowed by its fast competitor in terms of time. Traditional food can consume a considerable amount of time from choosing materials, to arranging your table for visual appeal. In contrast, fast food cannot be faster when making a five-minute trip to a store around the corner, or even dialling to a fast food company. Needless to say recently, a string of fast food companies have tried their hardest to enrich the menu.

To summarise, traditional food has an irreplaceable role in our life, backed with various merits. However, its prevalence is declining for people are more and more time conscious.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. Write a report for a university

lecturer describing the information shown below. You should write at least 150 words.

In this analysis we will examine three pie charts. The first one is headed ‘World Spending.’ The second is ‘World Population’ and the third is ‘Consumption of Resources.’

In the first chart we can see that people spend most of their income (24%) on food. In some countries this percentage would obviously be much higher. Transport and then housing are the next major expenses at 18% and 12% respectively. Only 6% of income is spent on clothing.

In the second chart entitled ‘World Population’, it is not surprising to find that 57% of people live in Asia. In fact China and India are two of the most populated countries in the world and they are both situated on this continent. Europe and the Americans account for nearly 30% of the total, whilst 10% of people live in Africa.

Finally, the third chart reveals that the USA and Europe consume a huge 60% of the world’s resource.

To sum up, the major expenditure is on food, the population figures are the highest for Asia and the major consumers are the USA and Europe.

The two graphs show that oil was the major energy source in the USA in both 1980 and 1990.

It is manifest from the pie charts that coal, natural gas and hydroelectric power remained in much the same proportions. On the other hand, there was a dramatic rise in nuclear power, which doubled its percentage over the ten years.

Oil supplied the largest percentage of energy, although the percentage decreased from 42% in 1980 to 33% in 1990. Coal in 1990 was the second largest source of energy, increasing its proportion to 27% from 22% in the previous decade. Natural gas, the second largest source in 1980 at 26%, decreased its share very slightly to provide 25% of America’s energy ten years later. There was no change in the percentage supplied by hydroelectric power which remained at 5% of the total energy used. Nuclear power the greatest change: in 1990 it was 10%, twice that of the 1980s.

As traffic problems become more and more serious in many cities of developed and developing countries, their governments have to try hard and loads of money and energy have been spent to deal with them. Firstly, it is not efficient for the commuters to use their private cars to and back from their workplaces. Occasionally we can see they have to sit on the wheels wasting time and fuel in a heavy traffic jam. At the same time, through burning the fossil fuels, green house gas CO2, CO1, acid rain gas SO2, fumes and dusts are being released into the atmosphere, all of which heavily overload the environment. Thirdly, with the increase of private cars, the road traffic accidents

are also rise dramatically. For example, in a city with 5000 cars, there will be at least 250 accidents happening everyday, which also burden the public healthy services.

On the contrary, expected public traffic may be an ideal solution to these problems. For example city buses and railways are widely used or being constructed by many cities. People can take buses easily, which can be found every 10 minutes or less in the peak time. Actually, Nottingham Transport Company is building its own light railway in the city, which is announced by the speak man of the company, “It will be completed in the next year, the tickets will be very competitive and at the same time the travel will be very safe and comfortable.”

On the other hand, public traffic had its own disadvantages. Usually it cannot provide door-to-door service. It is inconvenient to go shopping by public vehicles. Sometimes you must wait a long time for the train. And quite a lot of people prefer to enjoy driving. In conclusion, developing the public traffic is a useful approach to deal with these difficulties. One possible way, if not the best, is to taxi private cars heavily and use these revenues to provide citizens cheaper public traffic services.

Cities are often seen as places of opportunity, but there are also some major drawbacks of living in a large metropolis. In my opinion, governments could do much more to improve city life for the average inhabitant.

The main problem for anyone who hopes to migrate to a large city is that the cost of living is likely to be much higher than it is in a small town or village. Inhabitants of cities have to pay higher prices for housing, transport, and even food. Another issue is that urban areas tend to suffer from social problems such as high crime and poverty rates in comparison with rural areas. Furthermore, the air quality in cities is often poor, due to pollution from traffic, and the streets and public transport systems are usually overcrowded. As a result, city life can be unhealthy and stressful.

However, there are various steps that governments could take to tackle these problems. Firstly, they could invest money in the building of affordable or social housing to reduce the cost of living. Secondly, politicians have the power to ban vehicles from city centres and promote the use of cleaner public transport, which would help to reduce both air pollution and traffic congestion. In London, for example, the introduction of a congestion charge for drivers has helped to curb the traffic problem. A third option would be to develop provincial towns and rural areas, by moving industry and jobs to those regions, in order to reduce the pressure on major cities.

In conclusion, governments could certainly implement a range of measures to enhance the quality of life for all city residents.

International tourism does trigger tensions in a diverse array of fields. To begin with, the increase in the use of such traffic means as airplanes, trains, buses, and the like weakens the fragile balance (equilibrium) in an ecosystem. It also ruins the biodiversity in the ecosystem. Next, tensions in economic development are also conspicuous. The primitive economic pattern is inevitably vulnerable to the influences from the tourists who come from different economic systems. Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan, China is a typical case in point, where the local economic pattern has been shifting from the agriculture to tourism.

Despite the tensions, international tourism contributes to the understanding between people from different cultures, religions, races, and political ideas. This is because the tourism per se is more than appreciating the beautiful, brilliant natural landscapes, cultural traditions, or interesting customs. It is a kind of contacts. To contact is to communicate. Communication naturally promotes understandings. For instance, the Americans who traveled to Tibet tend to understand why Chinese governments insist that Tibet be a part of the Chinese territory and it should never be separated from the Chinese sovereignty. In fact, religious understanding serves as another telling example. The Christians who visit an Islamic attraction are more easily to accept that different religious should be able to coexist.

To sum up, the international tourism helps people understand each other although it has caused some tensions.

Wild animals have no place in the 21st century, and the protection is a waste of resources. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The current global extinction crisis is one of the greatest challenges posed by the rapid expansion of human populations. The protection of endangered species, as far as I can see, should be a top priority for three main reasons: economic value, scientific value, and survival value. Wild animals provide many valuable substances, such as meat, skins and furs. The financial value of wild species is important to the economies of many nations. In many countries the recreational viewing of animals at zoos is also a source of revenue. The study of wildlife, on the other hand, provides valuable knowledge about various life processes. Such study has helped scientists understand how the human body functions and why people behave as they do. Scientists have also gained medical knowledge and discovered important medical products by studying wildlife. In addition, by observing the effect of environmental pollution on wild animals, scientists have learned how pollution affects human life. Furthermore, every species of wildlife plays a role in helping maintain the balanced, living systems of the Earth. These systems must continue to function if life is to survive. Thus, the loss of any species can threaten the survival of all life, including human beings. In conclusion, the protection of wild animals in the 21st century is by no To conclude, cigarette smoking, in spite of its harm to a person’s health, has the advantage of earning revenue from taxes for a country and it is incomparable to the lethal drug abuse.

Some feel that the children of low income families are better equipped to deal with difficulties posed by the “real world” when they grow up and they also believe the privileged children of wealthy families are less fit to deal with these difficulties. The implications and veracity of this argument seem self-evident,but in fact require closer examination.

The popular wisdom is that children of poorer families learn early on the value of a buck ,and are thus naturally better suited to stretching money when times get tough in adulthood. Inversely, the children of wealthy families, thoseborn with a silver spoon in their mouths, are believed to be completely ignorant of the tentimes erroneously expecting the same situation in adulthood. They are believed to be prone to overspending and financial irresponsibility. This belief, though logical, overlooks one key point which is,of course, education.

The basis of this argument is,of course, knowing the value of money ,and the idea that children of the poor know this, and those of the wealthy do not.Who though,is in a better position to teach their children the value of money, someone skilled in earning and keeping it,the wealthy parent,or someone who can not seem to acquire it,the poor parent? Both wealthy and poor children are equally likely to acquire an education in money, whether it is formal,or in the school of hard knocks. Conversely, both children are as likely to ignore this education.

A poor child may believe that one can get along,if not as easily, without wealthy.A wealthy child may be well trained by a parent steeped in the knowledge of money management, the key to developing this skill is education.

Computer, the most exciting and significant invention in 20 century, will reshape our lives and our a result, some people proclaim that computers should be involved into our classroom, and replace the roles of human cannot agree with their point of view.w.

Admittedly,as the useful tools, computers can become the optimum assistants for human teachers in the beginning, vivid pictures shown on screen can motivate students’interest and curiosity combination of computers and Internet can provide children the abundant computers enjoy considerable merits, they cannot compare with human teachers for two main reasons.ns.

Among countless factors which influence my inclination, there is a most conspicuous one:computers are not as qualified as human teachers in academic we all know, students can get the final result of a mathematic question under the help of computers, however, they are still confused on the whole computing contrast, our human teachers’performance is much better in those not only can teach students how to analyze and compute the question, but also can remind them what are the possible errors that they may teachers are more adequate than computers in academic aspect.ect.

The second advantage of human teachers is they can guide students to deal with some psychological problems that they meet in China, sometimes, teachers even burden many responsibilities that students’parents example,as for the student with rebellious spirit, the important duty for teachers is to prevent the student from campus violence, even cannot do that.at.

In summary, from what has been discussed above,we may safely arrive at the conclusion that the positions of human teachers are unshakable, and computers cannot take the places of them.

In this IT age, computers are widely used in the classroom in order to enrich the methods of phenomenon gives some the illusion that the thing teaching students is no longer the teacher but a disagree with this opinion.n.

As another machines, computer doesn’t enable to control computers are capable of learning from their mistakes and improving on their performance, they need details instructions from human being in order to be able to can never,as it were lead independent lives,no mention teaching case a computer lacks the control of a teacher, there is no difference between a computer and waste.te.

Not only this, but computers, unlike a teacher, can’t solve a variety of new is developing in today’s society, including example,a student suddenly asks a creative question that the computer isn’t programmed for,it can do nothing, while teacher can explain clearly though abundant teaching experience.e.

Last but not least, the computer can’t communicate with students from as an eyesight or gesture of teacher can transfer his or her idea and feeling to this way, students can feel more human touch in the comparison, the computer is too dry and dusty to understand.nd.

All in all,no matter how nice a computer is,it can’t take the place of course,I don’t mean that computer is contrary,I believe it will become the most powerful assistants to teacher in further.r.

英语雅思作文(通用20篇) 第九篇

In modern society, with the continuous increment of population, students, even for those young ones, face fierce competition. To help their kids earn a competitive edge among peers, some parents believe it’s better for the children to learn subjects related to various fields, while others hold that focusing on a few courses is the best solution. From my points of view, I lean towards the former.

It is true that children will get more ideal grades when they merely focus on one subject or two. One’s energy is limited, and this is especially the case for young teenagers who cannot master so much knowledge both psychologically and intellectually.

By contrast, if they allocate much time on single subject, such as academic ones like math and language, and aesthetic ones like dancing and painting, they will be very likely to get much better performance in that domain than others.

This specialty can help them get enrolled in a good middle school in many cases. Furthermore, many educational practitioners argue that older school children are not suitable to learn so much academic curriculums including physics and chemistry mentally, as these content are too hard to be understood by kids at that young age.

As result, for the sake of kids’ near future, they should mainly focus on a few subjects.

However, the fallacy of the idea mentioned above is also obvious, and I believe school kids should try as many subjects as they can. Initially, no one, including the parents, could be completely certain about the talents hidden inside a child. Although the education only focusing on a few subjects is helpful for application to middle schools, this is definitely harmful to the discovery of the kid’s true talent, and could exert profound influence on the teenager in the long run. For another, as we all know, young teenagers are not so psychologically mature to concentrate themselves on one single subject for a relative long time as adults do.

Forcing these youngsters on a sole subject not only leads to a decreased efficiency in learning, but also ends up with family conflict in many scenarios. By contrast, if children are allowed to learn as many subjects as they want, all these problems can be avoided from happening.

Not only can children exploit their potentials in various spheres, they can also keep their mind sharp and learn the knowledge effectively.

In conclusion, although making older school children focus only a few subjects is beneficial to their near academic career, I believe only a wide range of subjects could ensure a promising future for the students, as long as the subjects are carefully selected and are not too hard to be understood by them.

With the development of science and technology, the cars have already become the important component in our daily life gradually. Cars make our life convenient and swift. However, too many cars have caused very serious social problems. Some people claim that the disadvantages of car are more than the advantages. I doubt whether the argument can bear much analysis.

Since one century [ago], the auto industry has [been] developed at full speed worldwide, and has brought the enormous progresses to our life. 英语雅思作文(通用20篇) 第十三篇

The development of children depends on many factors, including parents, school education, media, peers and so forth. personally, I agree that the family is less influential than other aspects working together, and my reasons would be explored as below.

Admittedly, the influence of family on children is very deep, because parents, primary teachers in the life of children, set the first role models for them to learn and imitate, and which would be logged into the impressionable childhood mind and determine basic behaviors and thinking of them. For example, by observing and learning the daily activities of parents, like speaking, cooking and house cleaning, washing hands before eating, a child can master the language, self-care ability and hygienic habits. Besides, parents also play a key role in developing the intelligence of children. For instance, with day-to-day teaching, communication and storytelling, a parent can help a child to improve cognitive skills like basic mathematic calculation, memorizing, reading, and thinking and judging in a proper way.

However, I strongly believe outside-of-home elements make greater contributions to the overall growth of children. Firstly, in terms of academic education, teachers in school have priority over parents. For example, compared with some parent who have low-level or even no education, teachers are professionally educated and trained in formal university, and well-experienced in teaching. That is to say, school teachers are more advantageous and influential, in terms of comprehensively and accurately instructing, explaining and demonstrating common knowledge about laws of nature and universe, theories and formulas of math and physics, and events and people in history. What is more, forming social skills also relies on a school environment where children have opportunities to communicate, play and argue with other peers. This strong interpersonal interaction can make children proficient in real-world socialization.

Besides, mass media is another external factor affecting children’s development. For example, violent video on the Internet, TV programs and computer games are very likely to twist social values of the young audience, because children, unlike adults, are lack of abilities to distinguish right from wrong. Therefore, with long-term exposure to ill information, children would be rude, aggressive and self eccentric. As a result, they, more often than not, consider violence as the main or even only way to solve problems, thereby leading to school bullying.

In conclusion, when it comes to the importance in influencing children, other aspects like teachers in school and media override the parents, for the reasons that the formers have incomparable effects on the education, social skills and personalities of children.

I am from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I believe that building a large factory near my community has advantages as well as disadvantages. In the following paragraphs I will list basic benefits and losses that will be brought by a new factory.

For several reasons, I think that a new factory will not be a good addition to my neighborhood. First of all, factories often bring pollution. They are prone to contaminating the local air and water. Second of all, factories make noise. Another important aspect of building a new factory near by is that it will make the local traffic heavy. As a result of this, the amount of traffic congestions will increase, as well as contamination of the air. So, all these obviously will not make ones life happier and healthier in my community.

From the other side, I believe that a new factory will bring some advantages to my community. First of all, it will bring new job opportunities. Many specialists will be required to work there. Second of all, I think many local community facilities will have to be renovated to obtain reliable supply of water and electricity. So, some old pipes may be changed. Another important benefit of this is that the local roads in order to manage the increasing traffic will be rebuilt and widened.

However, I do not think that listed above benefits are worth all these troubles including water contamination and the constant pollution of air. From my point of view all factories must be built far from the people communities because they can be really harmful for peoples health.

The graphic illustrates the life process of the silkworm and the phases in the manufacture of silk material.

Overall, the life cycle is a natural process and contains four cyclical phases, beginning with the laying of eggs and ending with the birth of a new moth from a cocoon. The production of silk is, in contrast to the previous stage, a man-made linear process comprising of 6 main stages.

To begin with, eggs are produced by the moth and it takes 10 days for the eggs to hatch into silkworm larvae that feed on mulberry leaves. This stage takes between 4 and 6 weeks before the worms construct a cocoon from silk thread, taking approximately one week. They stay there for around a fortnight, subsequently emerging as moths and the process can begin again.

The first stage in the manufacture of silk is the selection of cocoons and these are then boiled. Once boiled, the silk thread is unwound to a length of between 300 and 900 meters. Finally, the silk can be twisted and weaved into cloth before being dyed.

Some people believe that hobbies need to be difficult tobe enjoyable. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some hobbies are relatively easy, while others present more of a challenge.Personally, I believe that both types of hobby can be fun, and I therefore disagree with the statement that hobbies need to be difficult in order to be enjoyable.

On the one hand, many people enjoy easy hobbies. One example of an activity that is easy for most people is swimming. This hobby requires very little equipment, it is simple to learn, and it is inexpensive.I remember learning to swim at my local swimming pool when I was a child, and it never felt like a demanding or challenging experience.Another hobby that I find easy and fun is photography. In my opinion, anyone can take interesting pictures without knowing too much about the technicalities of operating a camera. Despite being straightforward , taking photos is a satisfying activity.

On the other hand, difficult hobbies can sometimes be more exciting. If an activity is more challenging, we might feel a greater sense of satisfaction when we manage to do it successfully. For example, film editing isa hobby that requires a high level of knowledge and expertise. In my case, it took me around two years before l became competent at this activity, but now I enjoy it much more than I did when l started.I believe that many hobbies give us more pleasure when we reach a higher level of performance because the results are better and the feeling of achievement is greater.

ln conclusion, simple hobbies can be fun and relaxing, but difficult hobbies can be equally pleasurable for different reasons.

What are the causes for losing varieties in languages and cultures?

Every human society has a culture that includes arts, customs, language, etc. Every culture changes and the main causes for losing varieties in language and culture, in my opinion, are: contact with other cultures, and development of science and technology.

When two cultures have continuous contact with each other, the two cultures may blend or adopt their cultural traits, such as language, clothing, etc. thus losing their individual cultural varieties. When people of one culture who move to a country where another culture dominates may give up their old ways and become part of the dominant culture. For example, groups of people from many countries have settled in the United States. Most of these people gradually abandoned the way of life of their homeland, and adopted an American way of life. They learned the language, adopted the customs, and followed the traditions.

The development of science and technology, on the other hand, may attribute to changes in a culture. The invention of steam engine, for example, produced great changes in the way people lived. The invention of the computer in the mid 20th century has also had enormous impact. It has brought far-reaching changes in communication, education, entertainment, and numerous other areas of modern life.

In conclusion, to lose varieties in language and culture is to lose richness in them. Therefore, to my mind, multiculturalism should prevail in the contemporary world, so that ethnic groups can bring variety and richness to a society by introducing their own ideas and customs.

英语雅思作文(通用20篇) 第十八篇

There are those who opine that pictures and videos clips in news coverage can more precisely inform individuals of events, while the opposing stance is that such information is unreliable. This essay will initially analyse the two ideas, followed by a presentation of my perspective, which is that visual sources in news reports are trustable, but people should still be critical.

It is justified that visual images can assist people to understand news stories with greater precision. This is mainly because these resources can help audiences to interpret events in a straightforward fashion. Exposure to photographs and videos makes it easier for readers and viewers to know what the event was, where it occurred and who were involved. With written articles, some expressions, including slang may prevent their comprehension. Additionally, it is hard to edit pictures and videos. In other words, what people see from visual images is the truth, but journalists can omit vital details or use exaggeration when writing news stories.

However, it is also true that photographs and videos in news reports are undependable. To begin with, these images may be fabricated due to different purposes. People may be remunerated to say something untrue and act out stories made up by journalists. Another point is that photos and videos can be heavily edited with the invention of advanced technological software. This means that even if journalists record events on the spot, photos and videos can be manipulated before being published.

In conclusion, I believe that both sides of the argument are reasonable. On balance, my firm conviction is that people can rely on visual images to appreciate news reports but should be cautious. After all, journalists are those who have been trained to strictly adhere to professional ethics and conduct, presenting facts with objectivity. Nevertheless, I feel that some may be biased, discriminatory and xenophobic, and their visual materials are not reliable. Thus, it is suggested that people do more research before drawing conclusions.

Some people believe that it is beneficial for children to spend time on TV, video and PC games, while some hold the opposite view. Talk about these two views and give your own opinion.

When it comes to whether children shall spend their spare time watching TV, video and playing PC games, people’s opinions diverse greatly. Some say it is basically a waste of children’s time, while others argue that children can benefit a lot from such activities.

It is firmly maintained by many parents and teachers that children’s main purpose is to pursue outstanding academic achievements at school. To beat their competitors, they must make the best use of every precious minute. Therefore, they can not afford to indulge themselves before the “idiot box” as TV or in playing the senseless virtual games. Moreover, watching TV and playing PC games are addictive for many poorly-disciplined children, consuming their interest in study and eroding their academic aspirations.

However, many other people hold different views, arguing that if properly guided and supervised, children can expand vision and knowledge as well as foster their creativity from those fun activities. There are many educational programs on TV such as Discovery which feed children extensive knowledge in science and arts. By sparking children’s interest and imagination in various topics, these programs are often more enlightening than textbooks. Furthermore, when playing PC games, children can foster a stronger sense of cooperation as well as competition, and sharpening their mind against possible risks in the real world. Last but not least, watching cartoons and science fiction movies definitely stimulates children’s imagination and creativity. Many youngsters have been inspired to come up with novel inventions of become engineering elites in later life exactly with the inspirations from those sources.

From the above discussion, it is evident that if children can balance their study and fun time properly, watching TV, video programs and playing PC games will unquestionably bring them more benefits than harm. After all, books are not the only source of useful knowledge; in order to grow healthily in modern times, children need to accumulate knowledge and skills from various channels, and suitable time for relaxation and inspiration is surely more welcome than not.

Some people think that university should not provide theoretical knowledge, but to give practical training that is beneficial to society.

  Do you agree or disagree?

The current hot issues concerning higher education include the one of whether university should provide theoretical knowledge or practical training. In my opinion, this issue is closely related to the different aims of different universities and the needs of the economic development of the respective country.

As we know, university education gives a student a better appreciation of such fields as art, literature, history, science, and human relations.

Therefore, it is necessary for the university to provide theoretical knowledge for those students who intend to receive liberal education.

Most universities also have professional colleges that prepare students for careers, such as teachers colleges, agricultural or dental colleges.

These colleges, apart from offering some liberal arts courses, usually allocate a certain period of time for professional training. For example, a student at teachers college usually takes a field training at a high school as a student teacher for two or three months.

Another important factor on this issue is the needs of the economic development of a respective county. For instance, in China, a great number of advanced professional personnel are needed to keep the pace with the rapid economic development. Therefore, cooperative education that combines classroom studies with practical work experience is more appropriate an education China needs at the present time.
