英语可以说in face of吗

在词典上查到的是 in the face of，查了几本词典都是这样，但看到这样一个句子，没有用定冠词：
He showed great bravery in face of danger. 在危险面前他表现出非常勇敢。
请老师们解释一下，能不能说 in face of？谢谢！

1. confronted by 面对：
He never shows any fear in face of danger. 在危险面前他从不畏惧。

2. in opposition to；inspite of 反对；不顾
Talking continued even in the face of the teacher's command to stop. 纵然老师已下令停止谈话，但有人还是讲个不停。
He succeeded in the face of all difficulties. 尽管困难重重，他还是成功了。
▲时至今日，仍然有许多专业词典均没有in face of 的例句提供，甚至是牛津及朗文。但明确标注in（the）face of的也有不少, 如罗老师提供的，还有上教版的《学生英汉词典》95年版p378，《英华大词典》；最有说服力的是由著名语言学家夸克等主编的CGEL。可以肯定的是，带定冠词几乎总是无可挑剔的。并且以前人们似乎并不认可in face of 的使用，比如1985年我国的高考题：
Great men never give up _____ difficulty.
A. in face of B. in face of the C. in the face of D. in the face of the
其所提供的标准答案为C. 实际上现在看来这对于选A 的考生有欠公允。
所以我的建议是，最好使用时带定冠词，不带也不错。
