Obama had just returned to his office for an hour or so after voting on the floor of the Senate. (NEWYORKER)
1. I will go to the beach for 10 days.
I will go to the beach and stay there for 10 days. (for 10 days 修饰隐含的 stay there)
2. I’m leaving town for a few days.
I’m leaving town and staying away for a few days. (for a few days 修饰隐含的 staying away)
3. She went to
She went to America and stayed there for two years, but now she’s back. (for two years 修饰隐含的 stayed there)
4. He borrowed a car from a friend for a few days.
He borrowed a car from a friend and used it for a few days. (for a few days 修饰隐含的 used it)
1. They stopped for a while to admire the scenery.
这个句子有不定式作目的状语,很显然,停下来的目的是to admire the scenery,而不是为了 stay for a while。
2. He stopped for a moment to allow his eyes to adjust.
同样地,这个句子有不定式作目的状语,很显然,停下来的目的是to allow his eyes to adjust,而不是为了 for a moment。
3. The patient’s heart stopped beating for a few seconds.
这句从句意上看,这里的 for a few seconds 应该不是 stopping beating 的目的。
Obama had just returned to his office for an hour or so after voting on the floor of the Senate.
I’ll go to the seaside for a week. I’ll go to the seaside and stay there for a week.
The patient’s heart stopped beating for a few seconds.
= The patient’s heart didn’t beat for a few seconds.
The rain had stopped for days.
The rain had not stopped for days.
我觉得这里的 return 与 for an hour or so 连用,倒没什么问题。
但我觉得这里的 just 与for an hour or so 连用,倒还有点问题——因为 just 放在动词 return 之前,说明它是修饰动词return 的,那 just return 的意思就是“刚刚返回”,这与 for an hour or so 是相矛盾的。
如果要表示“返回刚刚一个小时左右”,那 just 就应该放在 an hour 之前,如 for just an hour or so。如:
Complete set of garden tools for just £15.99!
Other theatre-goers complained Joan was on stage for just half an hour.
Each manager had responsibility for just under 600 properties.

Obama had just returned to his office for an hour or so after voting on the floor of the Senate. (NEWYORKER)
My answer to the mentioned-above question is as follows:
The English sentence mentioned above is thought to be false because the verb used as a predicate belongs to a transient verb and it can't be used with "for some time" together.
Obama had just returned to his office for an hour or so after voting on the floor of the Senate.
He has just joined the army for two years
=He has just joined the army and stayed in the armyfor two years.
The train has stopped for half an hour.
=The train has stopped and stayed there for half an hour
He has died for 20 years.(错误)
He has been dead for 20 years。
It is /has been 20 years since he died.(正确)
He died 20 years ago.(正确)
I will go to the beach for 10 days.
I will go to the beach and stay there for 10 days. (for 10 days 修饰隐含的 stay there)
He will join the army for 3 years
He will join the army and stay in the army for 3 years (for 3 years 修饰隐含的 stay in the army)
Obama had just returned to his office for an hour or so after voting on the floor of the Senate. He had spent the morning shuttling between the Senate and his office, being briefed on his schedule, chewing gum as he walked.
