face表示“面对”时如何确定用主动还是被动

_______ with so much trouble, we failed to complete the task on time. A. Faced B. Facing 答案选了 A，我们应该是主动面对，怎么用了被动呢？ 分词的这种用法，在语法书上叫什么，我看语法书讲了各种各样的特殊情况，令我无所适从，其实我就是想知道分词（这是做状语吧）的基本用法，请老师指点一下。

1. face 表示“遇到；面临；面对；应付；正视；不企图逃避”等意义，侧重主语行为的主观性和意愿性。如：
They have learned to face all obstacles with resolution and courage. 他们学会了以果断勇敢的精神正视（面对）一切障碍。
Let us face the facts instead of evading them. 让我们正视事实，不要逃避。
2. be faced with 表示“面对着......”，说明一种状态，而且不是出于主语的意愿。如：
He is faced with many difficulties, but he is capable to overcome them. 他面临许多困难，但他有能力克服他们。
Faced with this new turn of events, he decided to revise his original plan. 面对事件的这种新转变，他决定修改原计划。
▲ 根据你这个题目的语义可知，这里是表示一种客观存在的“状态”，不是人们主观行为的“意愿”，所以答案用 faced。再请看北京大学英语系编的《英语常用词用法词典》（商务印书馆 1982 年 10 月版 P. 175）上的一组正误比较的例句：
误：Facing the united opposition of the commune members, the Party committee decided to changeits distribution system.
正：Faced with the united opposition of the communemembers, the Party committee decided to change its distribution system. 面临社员的一致反对，党委会决定改变原定的分配制度。
