If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places associated with ancient art and culture and historical buildings. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL). These include remains of ancient cultures like Cuzco in Peru or the rock city of Petra in Jordan as well as old city centers such as Rome in Italy. Also common are places of artistic or cultural significance, like the Stonehenge stone circle in England. But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let’s look at a few of the more unusual sites on the WHL and why it is important to preserve them.
Citadel of Haiti
These monuments were built at the end of the 19th century when Haiti became independent and the many thousands of black slaves in Haiti were free for the first time. These ex-slaves built the monuments, which the WHL describes as “a universal symbol of liberty”.
Borders of France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations.
But it is also an area of small farms. The WHL has listed the site because it shows us about past European society through its landscape of villages, farms, fields, up land pastures and mountain roads.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
This railway in India was opened in 1881 and is still operating today. It crosses a difficult area of mountain landscape and it is a great example of railway engineering. The WHL says that it is “the first, and still the most outstanding, example of a hill passenger railway.”
The city of Brasilia
Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it “a land mark in the history of town planning”. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time so that they would harmonize with each other.
21.What’s the function of the examples of World Heritage Sites in paragraph 1
A.To highlight the importance of WHL.
B.To exemplify sites of artistic and cultural value.
C.To compare the differences between various sites.
D.To draw readers’ attention to more unique sites on the WHL.
22.Who built Citadel of Haiti
A.Former slaves. B.Citizens in Haiti.
C.Active revolutionaries. D.Haiti government.
23.Which site will attract a town planner most
A.Citadel of Haiti. B.Borders of France and Spain.
C.The city of Brasilia. D.The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

At the end of 2019,I learned that Here After AI, whose goal is to let the living communicate with the dead, was looking for applicants of its new AI project. Interested in what it was promising, I applied to experiment the software on my very-much-alive parents.
At first, I thought it would be just a fun project to see what was technologically possible. Then their health condition added some urgency to the experiment. I was frightened that my parents might die since my father had been diagnosed with cancer and my mother was recently developing symptoms of early Alzheimer’s disease, and that with the distance between us, I might never have the chance to say goodbye.
The first step was an interview. My parents were asked questions by a techician for hours-about everything from their earliest memories to what they believe will happen after they die. Whether through illness-generated concerns or a willingness to humor their daughter, my parents put up zero resistance. The company then took their responses and started to create the voice assistants. A few months later, my virtual parents arrived via email attachment.
When I communicated with them through the app on my phone, my hands were shaking. I hadn’t seen my actual, real parents for six months. They told me personal stories I’d never heard. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own. It was mesmerizing.
Personally, I have mixed feelings about my experiment. I’m glad to have my virtual parents. They’ve enabled me to learn new things about my parents, and it’s comforting to think that those softwares will be there even when my parents aren’t. On the other hand, I can’t help but find it sad that it took a stranger interviewing my parents for me to properly appreciate the complex people they are. But I feel lucky to have had the chance to grasp that-and to still have the precious opportunity to spend more time with them and learn more about them, face to face, no technology involved.
24.Why did the author initially join the AI project
A.To test out the new technology.
B.To preserve her parents’ voice.
C.To learn more about her parents’ life.
D.To remove the worry about her parents’ health.
25.What can we learn about the author’s parents
A.They liked talking a lot.
B.They died from the illnesses.
C.They opposed joining the project at first.
D.They provided data for the project.
26.What does the underlined word “mesmerizing" mean in paragraph 4
A.Alarming. B.Fascinating. C.Inspiring. D.Disgusting.
27.What does the author realize at last
A.AI means never saying goodbye to our parents.
B.The advances in AI technology have pros and cons.
C.The real connection with our parents matters most.
D.AI allows us to learn more about our virtual parents.

Is there any such thing as a salt tooth We are familiar with a sweet tooth, along with the negative effects of sugar. We are broadly aware of the disadvantages of too much salt, including high blood pressure, which puts pressure on the blood vessels (血管), the heart and the kidneys. It can also lead to water retention (水肿). But we don’t tend to police how much salt we eat — at least, not as rigorously as with sugar — or question whether we are just paying attention to our bodies, which require some salt for muscles to work properly, or we are being controlled by a strong urge.
A salt tooth is quite unlike a sweet tooth. It doesn’t create an appetite for itself at the hormone level. But salt does make our taste buds (味蕾) get used to it, so that the more you eat, the more you need to get the same salty hit. This is why chefs can get heavy-handed with it.
As Sam Bloom, a nutritional therapist, explains, “What is generally more concerning is the fat that is used together with salt, like salty crisps, fries and fast food. Ready meals are often the worst for hidden salts. Anything that adds flavor that isn’t a spice or herb will probably have salt added to it and can make you want to eat more because it tastes good. The salt and fat combination in these foods is what causes problems with cholesterol (胆固醇). The salt that people add to a meal is much less concerning.”
Nutritionists’ suggestion is convincing: When the desire for salt hits, avoid going straight for salty snack foods such as crisps and instead ensure you are well hydrated. Seek out whole foods, such as olives and leafy greens. These foods will help you alleviate the desire for salt, which may often be due to a desire for nutrient-rich food.
28.What does the underlined word “rigorously” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Generally. B.Strictly. C.Largely. D.Pleasantly.
29.Why is salt different from sugar according to paragraph 2
A.Salt attracts chefs.
B.Salt gets people adapted.
C.Salt can change hormone level.
D.Salt generates a special appetite.
30.What is Sam Bloom’s attitude towards ready meals
A.Objective. B.Approving. C.Negative. D.Ambiguous.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.Ways of seeking out whole food.
B.Reasons for getting the desire for salt.
C.Attitudes towards seeking for nutrient food.
D.Approaches to relieving the eagerness for salt.

Odors (气味) are complex and often have changeable structures, and can show meaningful information about an animal’s surroundings, like the location of food sources. But it has previously been assumed that mammalian (哺乳动物的) brains can`t fully process these temporal changes in smell because they happen so rapidly, much faster than an animal can smell.
Using behavioral experiments, researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL(University College London)found that mice can, in fact, detect very rapid variations within odors, at rates previously not thought possible. They also showed that mice can use this information to distinguish whether odors are coming from the same or different sources, even if they are very close to each other.
This suggests that the mammalian olfactory (嗅觉的) system is also key in processing the awareness of physical space and surroundings, guiding decisions important to survival.
Andreas Schaefer, group leader of the Sensory Circuits and Neurotechnology Laboratory at UCL says: “From an evolutionary (进化的) point of view our findings make sense as they help to explain why there is a lot of computational power within the olfactory bulb, the part of the brain where the nose sends signals to. It’s not only processing chemicals from odors but also calculating information about physical distance and sources. It would have been strange for evolution to create such processing power in this part of the brain if it were not being used to help the species survive.”
In one key experiment, the scientists trained mice to detect whether two odors were coming from the same source or separate sources. The mice were able to correctly distinguish this difference.
As part of the study, the scientists designed new technologies including a high-speed odor delivery device and equipment that can measure several odors with extremely high precision. These innovations will enable more complicated work on the olfactory bulb, increasing our knowledge of how this brain region processes information about the environment and influences behavior.
32.What has been previously assumed impossible for mammalian brains
A.Sensing fast and small changes in odors.
B.Responding to different behaviors properly.
C.Spotting relationships among different odors.
D.Remembering the exact location of food sources.
33.What do Schaefer’s words imply about the olfactory bulb
A.It sends signals to the nose. B.It changes an animal’s evolution.
C.It detects an animal’s surroundings. D.It recognizes different parts of the brain.
34.Why did the scientists create new technologies
A.To investigate the structures of several odors.
B.To learn more about how the olfactory bulb works.
C.To develop more treatments for the olfactory bulb.
D.To explore the impact of the environment on the brain.
35.What does the text mainly tell us
A.Mice might have a unique olfactory system.
B.Mammalian brains own computational power.
C.Different structures of odors attract different mice.
D.Rapid changing smells can teach mice about space.

It was just another boring day for Jamie, a third-grader. He sat in his English class, mindlessly doodling on his notebook.
“Jamie Turner, please report to the principal’s office immediately.”
Jamie’s heart sank. With his mind racing, Jamie grabbed his backpack and made the long walk down the hallway to the principal’s office, avoiding eye contact with fellow students. As he walked, he searched his brain for any possible explanations for why he was being called.
Jamie finally reached the principal’s office. He took a deep breath and pushed it open, bracing himself for the worst.
To his surprise, he found the principal, Mr. Harrison who was wearing a giant yellow chicken hat on his head, standing on his desk and waving his arms as if he were trying to fly!
Jamie’s mouth fell open at the sight, too stunned to speak.
“Jamie, sit down,” Mr. Harrison exclaimed, gesturing him to take a seat. “I’ve called you here because we’ve been having some complaints about your behavior. You’ve been… too funny.”
Jamie’s jaw dropped further. Was that really the reason he was called to the principal’s office
The principal continued, his tone serious, “Now, we take our education very seriously here, and while we appreciate a good sense of humor, we have to draw the line somewhere. We cannot have students disturbing the learning environment with their… their humor.”
Jamie couldn’t help it—he burst out laughing, doubling over in his seat as he gasped for breath.
Finally, Jamie managed to compose himself enough to speak. “I’m sorry, sir, it’s just… I can’t stop laughing at the thought of getting in trouble for laughing… and your hat! It’s ridiculous!”
The principal frowned, “Well, I’m glad you find it funny. But your teachers don’t.”
Jamie nodded seriously, trying to contain his laughter. “I understand, sir. I’ll be less funny in class.” “Um, Mr. Harrison, why are you wearing a chicken hat ” Jamie asked, unable to contain his curiosity.
“Oh, today is Animal Day for the first-graders.” Mr. Harrisjon grinned.

根据文章第三段“My parents were asked questions by a technician for hours—about everything from their earliest memories to what they believe will happen after they die. Whether through illness-generated concerns or a willingness to humor their daughter, my parents put up zero resistance. The company then took their responses and started to create the voice assistants.”(一位技术人员问了我父母几个问题——从他们最早的记忆到他们认为死后会发生什么。
根据第四段 “I hadn’t seen my actual, real parents for six months. They told me personal stories I’d never heard. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own.”(我已经有六个月没见过我真正的父母了。

They’ve enabled me to learn new things about my parents, and it’s comforting to think that those softwares will be there even when my parents aren’t. On the other hand, I can’t help but find it sad that it took a stranger interviewing my parents for me to properly appreciate the complex people they are. But I feel lucky to have had the chance to grasp that-and to still have the precious opportunity to spend more time with them and learn more about them, face to face, no technology involved.”(就我个人而言,我对我的实验有一种复杂的感觉。

根据第二段第二句和第三句“It doesn’t create an appetite for itself at the hormone level. But salt does make our taste buds (味蕾) get used to it, so that the more you eat, the more you need to get the same salty hit.(在激素水平上,盐本身不会产生食欲。但盐确实会让我们的味蕾适应它,所以你吃得越多,你就越需要得到同样的咸味)”可知,盐和糖不同是因为盐能让人适应。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Ready meals are often the worst for hidden salts. Anything that adds flavor that isn’t a spice or herb will probably have salt added to it and can make you want to eat more because it tastes good. The salt and fat combination in these foods is what causes problems with cholesterol (胆固醇).(即食食品通常是含隐性盐最多的食物。任何不是香料或草药的调味料都可能会添加盐,这会让你想吃得更多,因为它尝起来很好吃。这些食物中的盐和脂肪组合是导致胆固醇问题的原因)”可知,山姆·布鲁姆对即食食品的态度是消极的。故选C。
31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Nutritionists’ suggestion is convincing: When the desire for salt hits, avoid going straight for salty snack foods such as crisps and instead ensure you are well hydrated. Seek out whole foods, such as olives and leafy greens. These foods will help you alleviate the desire for salt, which may often be due to a desire for nutrient-rich food.(营养学家的建议很有说服力:当你想吃盐的时候,不要直接吃含盐的零食,比如薯片,而是要保证你的水分充足。选择天然食物,比如橄榄和绿叶蔬菜。这些食物将帮助你减轻对盐的渴望,这可能通常是由于对营养丰富的食物的渴望)”可知,最后一段主要是讲缓解对盐的渴望的方法。故选D。

【解析】32. 细节理解题。根据第一段“Odors (气味) are complex and often have changeable structures, and can show meaningful information about an animal’s surroundings, like the location of food sources. But it has previously been assumed that mammalian (哺乳动物的) brains can`t fully process these temporal changes in smell because they happen so rapidly, much faster than an animal can smell.”(气味很复杂,通常具有可变的结构,可以显示有关动物周围环境的有意义的信息,例如食物来源的位置。 第二段中“Using behavioral experiments, researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL(University College London)found that mice can, in fact, detect very rapid variations within odors, at rates previously not thought possible.”(弗朗西斯克里克研究所和伦敦大学学院的研究人员通过行为实验发现,老鼠实际上可以检测到气味的快速变化,其变化速度是以前认为不可能的。) 故选A。

It would have been odd for evolution to create such processing power in this part of the brain if it were not being used to help the species survive.”(它不仅处理气味中的化学物质,还计算有关物理距离和来源的信息。
根据最后一段“As part of the study, the scientists designed new technologies including a high-speed odor delivery device and equipment that can measure several odors with extremely high precision. These innovations will enable more complicated work on the olfactory bulb, increasing our knowledge of how this brain region processes information about the environment and influences behavior.”(作为研究的一部分,科学家们设计了新技术,包括高速气味传送装置和可以以极高精度测量多种气味的设备。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Using behavioral experiments, researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL(University College London)found that mice can, in fact, detect very rapid variations within odors, at rates previously not thought possible. They also showed that mice can use this information to distinguish whether odors are coming from the same or different sources, even if they are very close to each other.”(弗朗西斯克里克研究所和伦敦大学学院的研究人员通过行为实验发现,小鼠实际上能够以以前认为不可能的速度检测到气味的快速变化。 和第三段“This suggests that the mammalian olfactory (嗅觉的) system is also key in processing the awareness of physical space and surroundings, guiding decisions important to survival.”(这表明,哺乳动物的嗅觉系统在处理物理空间和周围环境意识方面也发挥着关键作用,可以指导对生存至关重要的决策。)
