请问老师,but for those digging through the debris在句子中做条件状语从句吗,不是独立主格对吗?those 后面省略了who were 对吗?完整结果应该是 “but for those who are digging through the debris” 对吗?

句2中开头,those 后面省略了who were 对吗?

可以理解两句中的分词作定语都是定语从句的省略形式,也可以认为就是分词直接作定语。有时候是省略了从句中 who 和 be,有时候不是。如:
those loving sports=those who love sports
第一句中的but for不是表示虚拟条件的“要不是……的话”。but 是并列连词,与上句形成转折关系。for 在这里是“对于……来说”。

现在分词作后置定语有2种含义
A:进行时态的定语从句简化形式(既表主动行为,又表进行行为)
结构如下:
名词+doing sth
=名词+关系代词+be doing sth
The man talking to the teacher is my father
=The man who is talking to the teacher is my father.
B:一般时态的定语从句简化形式(只表示主动行为)
结构如下:
名词+doing sth
=名词+关系代词+do sth
She needs one house facing south.
=She needs one house which faces south.
(备注:以上句子属于第2种,即B结构用法)
but for 属于含蓄虚拟条件一种结构形式(“要不是..)
But for the rain we should have had a pleasant journey.
要不是下雨, 我们会有一次愉快的旅行。
